Chaperone Responsibilities
The primary responsibility is the monitoring and safety of the dancers in your group!
  • If you agree to chaperone, please make arrangements for siblings as the room gets crowded and the dancers need your full attention.
  • For younger dancers, consider bringing quiet games or books to occupy their time while waiting. Know the name of your class’s dance routine(s).
  • You will escort any child /or the group to the bathroom before they go on stage. Check their costume to ensure that it is complete. If you need to leave the group for any reason, get another parent to watch your group.
  • When the Stage Manager calls your group, you will escort them to the backstage entrance, wait while they perform and return them to the waiting area. You need to remain backstage until each child is picked up after the show.
  • When a child is dropped off before the show, confirm who will be picking up the child after the show. If you are not sure, please ask for identification. No young child should be allowed to leave the room to find their parents!
  • “Backstage” is actually a school cafeteria. This is a wide open area, so bring a blanket for the children to sit on. The shows run 22 ½ hours, so the kids will need to be occupied, and they may get hungry. Please make sure that costumes are covered when students are drinking or eating anything. Some parents bring small DVD players to watch movies.
  • If you like, bring large shirts for the dancers to wear over their costumes so they won’t get dirty.
  • Do not leave until every child from your group has been claimed. Even if the students are done dancing, their parents may not pick them up right away. Parents who are watching the show must wait until the intermission to leave the building.
  • There will be a water cooler provided, so please bring cups for your group.
  • This year, the waiting area will be coed, and large tents will be used as changing areas. Boys and girls will be in the room, so remind students not to change in the middle of the cafeteria.
**MORE THAN ONE PARENT PER CLASS MAY BE BACKSTAGE, BUT THERE NEEDS TO BE AT LEAST ONE OFFICIAL CHAPERONE SIGNED UP WHO WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CHILDREN.**
